Backflow Prevention Device Testing
Backflow Prevention & Annual Testing Requirement
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) requires all public water systems to implement a cross-connection control program to protect drinking water from potential contamination. A cross-connection is any actual or potential connection between the potable water supply and a source of contamination. Common examples include:
- Fire suppression systems
- Lawn irrigation systems
In particular, fire suppression systems commonly contain antifreeze or other additives. If backflow occurs, these substances could enter the drinking water system and create a health risk.
To prevent this, state regulations require all backflow prevention devices to be tested and certified every year to ensure proper operation.
Program Administration
The District has partnered with Backflow Solutions, Inc. (BSI) to administer the backflow program. BSI is the District’s authorized agent and is responsible for:
- Sending annual due and past-due test notifications
- Tracking test results and compliance
Important Reminders:
- Property owners are responsible for scheduling their own backflow test.
- BSI does not perform testing.
- Certified testers must submit results directly to BSI Online.
- A list of certified local testers can be found on the BSI website. Please note that you must have your BSI Customer Confirmation Number (CCN). The CCN is located in the upper right hand corner of the letter you receive from BSI.
